This is a comedic improvisational movement practice for those who may not be used to using their body for creative movement! I can often find myself feeling stuck, uncreative, unsure of how to continue a story, etc. In this video, the student and I will start with a three line prompt and come up with the rest of the story by physically acting it out! Our three-line prompt was: “Suzy walked to the beach. She found a shell she liked. She picked it up.” We ended up with an elaborate story that had us both laughing! -NYV0123E

If you suffer from lower back or hip pain, like 4/10 people, maybe we can help you! This kind of stiffness or discomfort is often a result of an irritation in the Sciatic Nerve. The feeling can be AWFUL, like a shooting pain that goes right down your leg into your feet. One of the ways to help curb this agony is to stretch this muscle located deep in your hip called the Piriformis. This is a practice that shows a few stretches that can get to that deeply located muscle so this pain can stop ruining you day. This practice is not recommended for those with severely crippling sciatica as it is still not gentle enough. Consult your doctor before doing any yoga at this strong beginner level if you have any history of health problems with your hips. Feel Better! -NYV0121B

Opening the shoulder’s and neck are a must, if you work at a desk all day, stressed, lift weights, or maybe carry a baby all day. Many of us suffer from stiff and sore muscles. Opening these muscles can help relieve that. We, including myself, tend to hold tension in our necks that travel into our shoulders. This can cause stiffness, aches, or injuries. These asanas and stretches may help relieve some of that tension. Massage and acupuncture can also be useful tool if yoga is not enough. Stretching is always important. The body needs to relieve itself and can cause an unhealthy balance in your body and life. Many of these stretches you can do anywhere. At work or the comforts of your own home. This is my personal GET READY FOR BED routine. There’s a lot of yoga postures that people recommend for winding down, but for my routine, I specifically target the muscles that are often overworked and overlooked throughout my day running around the city. By the end of the day, my feet are killing me, my back is in pain and I’m slouching, my joints are stiff, and my attention is scattered. This is a great routine for anyone right before bed to help care for tired, achey muscles, and center and calm the mind to get ready for a good night’s sleep. It’s also a good routine to promote relaxation if you’re feeling a bit anxious.
In the video, I borrow from ballet to help stretch out our feet, then move through some yoga forward folds to release the hamstrings and the back. We spend a lot of time seated and lying down to promote relaxation and the feeling of the ground supporting you. Most importantly, we breathe, very slowly and intentionally. It’s an open-level class for anyone even if you don’t have experience with yoga. If you have any injuries, always listen to your body and check with a physician if you have questions about yoga with an injury. You can skip anything you want, take breaks when you need to, and modify the postures to better fit your needs. -NYV0122

If you wanna show off your flexibility skill on your Instagram photos, this class is for you! However, being able to split doesn’t have any health benefit. So, don’t go too crazy about this. In this video, I will demonstrate front split and side split. I recommend you to spend good amount of warming up, before you start excessive stretches that open up your hip, that can lead to injuries. Also, I have to let you know that you will not achieve full splits in overnight. It’s a practice that would need to build up to it by daily practice. So, take your time, listen to your body. Having good physical habits is a practical way to get out of depression! Mental health is a vital and often neglected part of achieving a state of well-being. In yoga we teach and demonstrate how the mind and body are intimately bound through the breath, and therefore physical, mental, emotional, spiritual health are all connected. This video will demonstrate and explain a series of yoga postures (asana) and breath techniques (pranayama) to help combat the symptoms of depression when they arise. We discuss the mental and emotional effect of each pose and modifications are offered for days when fatigue does not allow the practitioner to do the more vigorous poses. Yoga is not a substitute for therapy, medication or other professional treatment, but can be a wonderful supplementary practice for improving quality of life when you are living with a mental illness. “Depression” is a mood disorder spectrum that ranges from sub-clinical to a diagnosed disorder. What is Psoas? It is a deep muscle that is connected to the hip flexor. They contract to pull the thigh muscle and the torso together. It is very common for people to have tight hips. This happens when the hip flexors become short. For people who sit in a desk all day or even with activity such as sit ups and weight training that shorten the hips instead of elongating the muscle creating tightness. In the body everything is connected so if one muscle is off in can cause a domino effect in the body. This can create bad posture and cause lower back pain. That is why in yoga, hip openers can help with this tightness. and help relieve that tension. Stretching out the psoas can be intense. Using breath work can help relax the mind and the muscles. Always breath and never hold. By opening the psoas this can bring flexibility and mobility back into the body. It can relieve that tension and stress as well as bring good blood circulation throughout the body. -NYV0109B

You do not have to be flexible to start yoga. Yoga is a great way to start getting your body moving, to connect your breath with your body, and to stretch out the body. By keeping up a practice with yourself, your body with gain more flexibility. If you want to work on your body’s flexibility here are some yoga stretches to help. Use a yoga strap (yoga belt) to help gain more control although it is optional. This is great for the beginners who want to further their stretch. Always listen to your own body. It is great to push yourself but take your time in each stretch-breath. This is great for a full body stretch. Focus on hip openers, hamstrings, calves, shoulders, and chest. -NYV0109A
