Many of us experience and live with anxiety and/or depression and that shows up in our bodies. It is imperative we take care of ourselves and that starts with our minds and bodies. Knowing we have power over physical vessels and can calm ourselves is such a tool. This flow is gentle and begins with a pranayama (breathing) technique to center, ground, and reset our nervous system. We will move through a flow to help us get into our bodies and out of our heads. We can all agree that 2020 has been one heck of a stressful year, right? Whether it’s financial, or emotional, or health-related, it’s been harder to fall asleep at night for me. If you are in the same boat, this exercise is for you. A gentle, welcoming stretch to aid with sleep and relaxation. We’ll do a full body scan, working on bilateral stimulation to calm our mind and body. This exercise is for all fitness levels and ages.

FACE: Alternating nostril breathing, warming our hands and releasing jaw tension, and massages our temples, and eyebrows.

SHOULDERS: Releasing tension through the side of our neck, reaching down our spine, moving to all fours and finding some cat/cows, child’s pose with threading one arm through

HIPS: Pigeon pose, shift onto back and cactus arms, and windshield wiper legs R and L together, scootch to the edge of the wall, let legs rest against the wall allowing blood flow to release back throughout the body and decrease swelling. Please enjoy some deep belly breaths staying in this position, and catch some good zzz’s!

Naked Grounding Meditation 2: Earth, Water, Air, Fire! (NAKED YOGA SCHOOL®) with Maya Kamui
“Fight, flight, freeze, fawn” is a physiological response to perceived danger. Our brains are preparing our bodies to react quickly. We can recognize this state by a quickening of the heart and breath, sweaty palms, nausea or butterflies in the stomach, dry mouth, and several other uncomfortable body sensations. Worst of all, we can lose access to our words, slowly losing connection to our own rational thinking. Smart people can’t remember their own names. While the danger may only be a projection, the fear we experience is real. If we are going to bring our bodies and brains back to neutral, we have to work with ourselves gently. Bringing Yourself Back When the body is in fight, flight (the sympathetic
system is triggered), the only way to recover stasis is to start the parasympathetic system in the body. Think of it as the body’s reset button, bringing the larger systems of the body back to normal and the brain back online.
The following grounding exercise is borrowed from the social work treatment modality and is often taught to first responders who need to be fully present when running towards life-threatening danger. Works for them, works for us! Begin with step 1 and layer the following steps, so that by step 4 you are doing all steps at once. Do the entire exercise with yours eyes open. We want to be present, not isolated. While the exercise is successful bringing you back, you may still feel nervous. Don’t worry, this is adrenaline in your body, the same chemical when we feel excited.-NYV0158C

If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that sometimes the best gym is the one in our own home! Ditch your equipment, and substitute everyday household items for this 38 minute workout.
You’ll need: two water bottles, two paper plates, and a small bag of rice/lentils!
All levels welcome as we do 10 minutes/10 exercises with paper plates such as plank slides, and mountain climbers. Then we will transition into a water bottle arm workout involving weighted arm circles, pulses, and Superman pose. Naked Workout using a Towel! (NAKED YOGA SCHOOL®) with Cecile
I absolutely love using household items to incorporate into my workout, because during a quarantine time, we don’t always have access to gym equipment such as hand weights or machines. Grab a tea towel, or even just a pillowcase; the goal here is to keep constant tension and activation in our muscles by pulling on either end of the tea towel. This workout will raise your heart-rate but in a slow, steady, and doable rate!

(2 ROUNDS, FIRST ON KNEES, SECOND IN SQUAT): Twirl tea towel and make it
taut on either end, engaging in a spinal twist R and L. Now move towel up
above head, and then out front. Twist R and L “walking” your hands up 4
counts, and 4 counts back down. Then row R and L, imitating rowing in a
kayak or rowboat. Two rounds of this will leave those arms nice and warm.

ABS: Lay down on your back keeping the tea towel overhead and tighten core
into a full sit up, Next raise your legs so that your feet are towards the
ceiling, and raise your towel into a toe touch. Place feet on the ground,
knees bent, and crunch to the R and to the L with your tea towels, engaging
your side abdominals.

LEGS/CARDIO: Deadlift on one leg reaching forward, repeat 5 times, and
switch to other leg. Set towel on the ground and ski jump to either side of
tea towel, Standing in between the towel engage in a series of butt kicks
and high kness. Repeat this series for two rounds.

STRETCH: On the floor, wrap towel around the arch of your foot and stretch
forward, then to back and open leg for a deep hip stretch. Sitting up in a
criss cross position, use the towel to aid in a shoulder stretch.
Et voila! Your household items have a whole new purpose!

Core is one of the most important areas to work! Our core is what holds our body together and keeps us standing upright. For anyone with back pain, or looking to build overall strength and stability, this is a great exercise for you.
This is a challenging but well worth it set of core exercises. Please have a mat or soft surface available as we will be spending most of our time on the ground. Water bottle encouraged.

STRETCH:
– Downward dog, flow through to a plank and upward dog, and abdominal stretch. Allow an ample amount of time to roll wrists. Find a table top and include a few cat cows into your practice.

FOREARM EXERCISES:
– plank on your forearms, and push back with your hips aiming towards the ceiling.
– forearms plank, and tilt your hips over to the L and then to the R,
just hovering hips right above touching the mat.
– forearm plank again, but this time rock back and forth, keeping core tight, quads engaged, an exercising shoulders.

PLANK EXERCISES
– full plank up on hands, then tap your R hand forward and L, resisting
moving hips back and forth.
– full plank on hands, then go down onto your forearms and back up onto hands.
– plank onto your R side and reach your other arm to the sky, then “thread it through” like a needle. Repeat this on your L side.

ON BACK
– bicycle crunch (opposite knee to opposite elbow)
– opposite leg touch fingertips, keeping leg and arm as straight as possible
– on back, legs come to 90 degree, then tap each foot down R and L
– Come up to elbows or palms, still laying on back, and tuck knees in R
and L. Put a water bottle in the middle of mat and go on either side.

STRETCH
– all fours again, and flow a few cat/cows.
