Having good physical habits is a practical way to get out of depression! Mental health is a vital and often neglected part of achieving a state of well-being. In yoga we teach and demonstrate how the mind and body are intimately bound through the breath, and therefore physical, mental, emotional, spiritual health are all connected. This video will demonstrate and explain a series of yoga postures (asana) and breath techniques (pranayama) to help combat the symptoms of depression when they arise. We discuss the mental and emotional effect of each pose and modifications are offered for days when fatigue does not allow the practitioner to do the more vigorous poses. Yoga is not a substitute for therapy, medication or other professional treatment, but can be a wonderful supplementary practice for improving quality of life when you are living with a mental illness. “Depression” is a mood disorder spectrum that ranges from sub-clinical to a diagnosed disorder. It is characterized by lingering feelings of sadness, physical aches, fatigue and lack of interest or passion. It can affect any person at any time with no particular cause of onset. NYV0114C
